Apep

(back to Egyptian deities and creatures)

shown as a crocodile or a giant snake, Apep represents darkness and evil.
As the myth goes, everyday Re sails the sun boat beneath the earth and Apep, who sits jealously in darkness tries to eat him up. Every night however Re defeats him and sails the sun back into the sky in the morning.

Every now and again Apep would be sucessful in devouring Re, but Seth and Mehen cut his belly open so that Re can escape.
