back to Egyptian deities and creatures

Depicted as an ugly dwarf, so ugly it's comical, and so ugly a statue of him alone would scare away demons.
Because of Bes's strange appearances, it is thought that he was not origionally an Egyptian god, but adopted from somewhere.

He is known as the god of music, entertainment, laughter, and more commonly of child birth. It is said during the birth of a child he runs about the room shaking his rattles to ward off evil spirits, and when a baby smiles seemingly for no reason at all it is because Bes is making faces at it.

Strangly enough, Bes is also sometimes considered a god of war, with a lion like power.

During the time the Romans took over, Bes was so wide spread and loved throughout Egypt that the Romans took the god into their religion.
