Route 50

By Ali.

I have it in my blood to travel. My ancestors must have been gypsies or something.

Also, since my family now lives in Colorado, I always have the urge to want to jump in my car and drive out west to see my family.

I also saw this special on TV last summer (a mini series) hosted by Tom Brokaw called American Character Along Highway 50. The route stretches from Ocean City, Maryland to Sacramento, CA.

So I has formulated a plan.

I want to do this.

Of course, it would have to start (technically) in Orono, ME, and go down to Ocean City. But that's OK. :)

This, of course, is a future-future plan because with school and rent obligations and what-not…it can't be afforded right now.
(although, to be awesome, it would be AMAZING to do over the summer. Like, right before school starts back up in the fall).

Travel Distance

  • Travel distance is calculated anywhere from less than 3000 mi, 3011 mi or 3073 mi.
  • MapQuest calculated the distance from Ocean City, MD to Sacramento, CA to be 2862.37 mi (but that route is mostly taking I-80 and doesn't take H-50).
  • I don't know what my GPS calculates it to be, but I will update this part when I find out.

Car Costs

  • My Escort gets ~25 mpg. I calculated it via MQ at 22mpg (just so I don't "under budget" this) and the cost for this trip would be roughly $502. I would aim for $600 or even $650 for gas.
  • I would also need to change the oil in my car, considering the trip one way will be well over 3000 miles. I don't know how much it would cost (especially if we changed it out of state) but within Maine I have paid anywhere from $25 to $50…so I would wager in a good $60 per change. And I am assuming I would have to change it three times (once before leaving, once on the way, and once back), so that's an extra $180 planned in.
  • I would also need to get windshield wiper fluid…but I'm not sure why I'm including this here because it's, what? Like $3 at Wal-Mart? lol.

Places to See On the Way

  • I really don't know what there is to see. I should look on that Tim Brokaw special (if I can find anything of it online) to see if they found any cool places along the way. I do know the stretch takes you through 12 states: Maryland, Washington D.C. (although that's technically a province), Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and ends up in California. I know Virginia's beautiful and I could visit Richmond, which is beautiful. I know my family lives in CO and where they live it's gorgeous (although, unless we made a detour, I wouldn't be passing through because it's OUT of the way. lol)
  • The trip would still have to start here in Orono, Maine, USA so I would be passing through more states than just the 12 headed west; I'd also have to go through: Maine(duh), New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Delaware before I even get to Maryland. So, in total, 19 states.
  • Oh, but back to places to visit: Penn Jillette (one of my heroes ^_^) grew up in Mass in a town called Greenfield. It's in Mid-western Mass. It's about 2 hours from Worcester (which is a place, I believe, the route goes through).

I'm not sure about other locations (as I said, I will have to look into that) but if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. :)

Shot Glasses

Of course I will attempt to stop in every state I don't already have a shot glass for and get one (there aren't that many.
I do need:

  • West Virginia
  • Indiana
  • Missouri
  • Kansas
  • Connecticut
  • New Jersey

I also might end up passing through RI to either see Anthony and/or get a shot glass from there. X)
